A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman was seriously assaulted and a car set on fire.

Northamptonshire Police said the woman was attacked inside a black Toyota RAV4 car in Diamond Way, Irthlingborough, on Sunday evening.

It said the car had been driven to the location from Mill Road in Wellingborough at about 19:50 BST and returned there shortly after 23:00. The woman was then able to leave the vehicle and seek medical treatment - the car was later found ablaze in a layby on the A6 at Rushden.

A 47-year-old Rushden man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with this incident and is currently in police custody.

Police said the car was reported to be on fire at about 04:00 on Monday, in the layby on the stretch of the A6 between the roundabouts with Bedford Road and Newton Road.

Officers have appealed for anyone who saw the vehicle and any of its occupants at any of the above locations during the stated times to get in touch.
