An art deco theatre is set to host its first public performances in 40 years.

The 1930s Palace Court Theatre was acquired by Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) in 2020 and is being refurbished with rehearsal and educational space and a 400-seat auditorium.

The Ballad of Maria Marten by Beth Flintoff is being staged at the start of its first season from 15 May.

The university said the theatre would reclaim "its spotlight in the town's cultural landscape".

One of the resort's last remaining art deco theatres, it is being reactivated as a venue for educational and cultural engagement.

Work on the venue in Hinton Road is continuing while the first productions take place.

Prof Paul Gough, principal and vice-chancellor at AUB, said: "Substantial refurbishment has already been undertaken at the theatre and will continue as AUB creates a space in Bournemouth town centre for students and the community to enjoy creativity and connection.

"By using the spaces that have already been refurbished, the venue will be able to host a full programme of educational and cultural events."

The first show is put together by AUB Productions which brings together industry professionals with students studying acting, costume and set design.

Other forthcoming productions are the comedy La Casa Nova by Carlo Goldoni and William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
