  1. Flood alert

Areas affected: Groundwater flooding in the Great Shefford area

    ACTIVE

Started at: 14:05 BST on Fri 17 May

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels are high but have started to slowly decline at our Northfield Farm borehole in the Great Shefford area. Groundwater levels are above normal for this time of year and are at a level where communities may continue to be affected by groundwater flooding. Groundwater levels are steady, but the catchment remains sensitive to further rainfall due to saturated ground and high groundwater levels. Low-lying land, gardens, roads, and cellars will therefore continue to be at risk of flooding. Due to the nature of groundwater flooding, this situation could continue for several weeks or longer. Avoid driving or walking through floodwater as there may be concealed hazards. We are continuing to monitor groundwater levels and check impacts in the area. We will update this message next week by 24/05/2024, or as the situation changes.

Areas affected: Groundwater flooding in South East London

    ACTIVE

Started at: 16:33 BST on Tue 14 May

Flooding is possible - be prepared

Groundwater levels in East Surrey and South London rose during the winter following higher than average rainfall. Levels continued rising until late March and remained high in April. However, groundwater levels across the area have now started to fall, although some properties with deep basements in and around Purley and low-lying land near the Caterham Bourne could still experience flooding.

Whilst property and garden flood risks have reduced, riparian owners are reminded to keep clear any sections of river that flow through their land. The Environment Agency is monitoring the situation alongside Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council and the London Borough of Croydon. We will update this message on Thursday 23 May 2024, or sooner if the situation changes.
